DaCooksta’s Deal of the Week: Torchlight

December 20, 2009 Leave a comment

So, unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past month, chances are you’ve heard of Runic Games’ dungeon crawler Torchlight. The game has a very Diablo 2-esque feel to it, which is a very good thing. Everything from most of the development team to the music of the game is pure Diablo (Matt Uleman, the composer of Diablo 2 and the upcoming Diablo 3 also wrote the music for Torchlight). The game features beautiful graphics (assuming you’re into cartoon graphics), interesting dungeons, and great level design. This weekend, Torchlight is on sale for $10 (50% off the already low price of $20). You owe it to yourself to get this game. Call it an early Christmas present, a reward for keeping all those New Year’s resolutions (you did keep them, right? hm, maybe not.), whatever it takes to get this incredible game.

Note: Torchlight does NOT have a multiplayer component at this time. However, the developers have said that a MMO aspect of Torchlight is in development. According to the developers, the MMO will be a standalone game, but will be F2P and have many of the same elements of Torchlight.

Honorable Mention: Team Fortress 2, Valve’s award-winning class based multiplayer powerhouse is also 50% off, making it $10. If you haven’t picked this one up yet, now’s the time.

DaCooksta’s Deal of the Week: Counter Strike Source

December 11, 2009 Leave a comment

Hey all!
This weekend, Valve’s multiplayer hit Counter Strike Source is on sale for 5.00 USD (75% off standard price) on Steam! Despite coming out in late 2004, CS:S has a very active community in addition to a thriving mod community. There’s a bit of a learning curve, but once you get the hang of it, you’ll be scoring headshots with the best of them.

In my opinion, $5 for Counter Strike is a steal. If anything, it’s a Source Engine game, so  you’ll be able to play all of the Source Mods out there (Like Orion, for example) if you don’t already own a Source game.

So get out there and start fragging!

Also worth noting: Dreamkiller is available for free this weekend, and may be purchased at a discounted price ($22.49 instead of $30.00).

Mod Preview: Orion (Half Life 2)

Orion is a mod with one aim in mind – providing players with hours of multiplayer fun and there’s definitely nothing wrong with that! The mod is a total conversion multiplayer modification built on Valves source engine. I admit, the HL2 mods I go for are mostly the single player ones but this one has me intrigued.

Medal of Modern Warfare with teaser trailer!

December 3, 2009 4 comments

In a move to breathe some new life into its Medal of Honor franchise, EA has announced that the latest Medal of Honor game will move away from the battlefields of World War 2 and into todays war torn Afghanistan. Medal of Honor has been losing steam as of late and with the Call of Duty franchise having a firm grip over the FPS genre, EA will be hoping that this will provide some competition and return the franchise to its initial success.

There is some information on who you will actually be playing as in the game. The cover is actually a picture of US Special Forces soldier nicknamed “Cowboy” (featured in Time Magazine) who is sporting a rather badass beard and the trailer does suggest him as a playable character. The multiplayer portion of the game will be handled by EA Dice which is responsible for the Battlefield series.

COD4:MW Star Wars mod looks nothing short of amazing

December 2, 2009 4 comments

The mod dubbed Galactic Wars is a total conversion multiplayer modification for Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. The mod will bring about the factions, locales and weapons found in the Star Wars universe and combine it with the acclaimed multiplayer gameplay of the original Modern Warfare. The gameplay video here looks nothing short of amazing, the map looks great as do the models and the sound is just like what you would get off a Star Wars movie.

Developed by German Call of Duty community blackMonkeys the mod will of course be absolutely free and should release for public beta on Dec 18th barring any unforeseen circumstances.
